Cha Ca La Vong-min

Restaurant Review

No Choice Menu = Winner!

2 Jun , 2015

I do admire a restaurant that only offers one choice on the menu and that is what kind of drink you have!

Cha Ca La Vong is one of these, and the sole dish is called…yes, you guessed it, Cha Ca La Vong. This is a dish that I first tried in Hanoi many years ago, at a place which I often visited when I returned to Hanoi.

I didn’t think it was widely available in Hanoi, and I thought it was impossible to get in Saigon. However, as with most things in my life, I was wrong.

Cha Ca La Vong_sides-minThe dish itself is a bit hard to describe, but here it goes; slightly fatty cubes of fish, fried with various herbs (fennel?). It is served with noodles, nuts, and crunchy things. It has a unique taste.

It also comes with something, that up until fairly recently, I considered quite disgusting, the purple evil prawn/shrimp sauce. Previously I tried this sauce and immediately reached for something to get rid of the taste, at the same time getting the waitress to remove it from the table…but, a friend showed me, generous squeeze of lime and a heap of fresh chilli makes the previously uneatable be a very tasty sauce.

Cost is 180k per head. If you haven’t tried this dish, you should put it on your list.

Happy eating.
