Restaurant Review

Love to Eat

On reflection, I should have at least had my glasses on when taking these food snaps, they are dismal in comparison to the food itself. No bad thing if you are heading down to LovEat anytime soon.

The restaurant is in the heart of District 1, opposite the Bitexco Financial Tower, which means that it is easy to find, and well placed for a sneaky cinema date after you have eaten. Described as Mediterranean – Italian style, the menu has been carefully considered, and it shows. In fact there is an attention to detail that starts from the moment you walk in, and courses through all four floors of the establishment.

On the fourth floor, you will find their brand new roof terrace, which is small but perfectly formed. It seems that this rule applies to their food as well.

Dinner for 3;

Appetizers:

Caprese Classica – Homemade mozzarella cheese, fresh tomatoes, basil and olive oil
Calamari Fritti – Fried squid with a herbed mayonnaise

Mains:

Gnocchi Alla Sorrentina – Homemade potato gnocchi with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil au gratin
Lasagne Spinaci E Ricotta – Homemade lasagne with spinach, ricotta cheese and bechamel

The word ‘homemade’ crops up quite a lot, which meant that we had a bit of a wait whilst they prepared our meals, but that the wait was worth it. The mozzarella was firm and fresh, and the perfect way to start an Italian masterclass. The gnocchi fluffy and light, the bechamel was rich and creamy; all was as it should be, unless I am being brutally honest, in which case I might mention that the calamari was a bit chewy.

Portion sizes are perfect; despite the fact my eyes told me I could manage a desert. I couldn’t. However, m y head tells me that I will go back to sample the signature dish, ‘Moules Frites’, and to demolish the exquisite looking desert menu.

There is no such thing as a cheap Italian in HCMC, but you get you pay for. A shared starter, main and glass of red, left me with little change from 500,000VND. Although, happy hour between 5pm and 8pm made it all seem much better!

NB: A word to the wise, despite what the menu tells you, wine is not included in happy hour.
